Abstract:

Standard local wind meters fail to provide sufficient information about spatially averaged wind parameters required for many practical applications. This work describes the theoretical foundations and field tests of a method for estimating integral crosswind along an optical path. The method is based on the correlation analysis of time series of image jitter of a pair of horizontally spaced objects. Unlike previous works, the wind speed is estimated from the slope of the odd part of the mutual correlation function of image jitter series at zero and the variance of their difference. Both parameters are weakly sensitive to synchronous interference, which determines much greater stability of a measuring instrument to vibrations. A possibility of wind speed profiling is discussed. The results can be used in aviation for measuring crosswinds on runways, in meteorology, optical communications, ecology for estimating pollutant transport, and other fields which require real-time remote measurements of spatially averaged wind speed.
