Abstract:
Aerosol particles significantly impact the planet’s radiation balance and the associated climate transformations. The results of the study of the hygroscopic and volatile properties of artificial aerosol media created by spraying sea salt and ammonium sulfate solutions are presented. The experiment was conducted in the Large Aerosol Chamber (LAC) at Institute of Atmospheric Optics, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences. The dynamics of the particle size distribution function was studied by stepwise heating an air mixture in three temperature ranges (25 °C; 25–100 °C; 100–250 °C) and recording the particle concentration in eight radius ranges from 0.2 to 2 mm at each temperature step with relative air humidity varying from 30 to 85%. It is shown that the hygroscopic and volatile properties of aerosol media containing sea salt or ammonium sulfate significantly differ, which enables identifying these compounds within the composition of atmospheric aerosols. The identified patterns provide a more reliable parameterization of the transformation processes of aerosol particles under varying humidity conditions, which is essential for improving the accuracy of predictions regarding the radiative impact of aerosols on the climate. The results can be of interest in atmospheric optics, applied chemistry, and studies of atmospheric aerosols.
