Abstract:

A statistical model of images distorted by the atmosphere is applied together with general principles of image processing to determine the dependence of the limiting resolution of traditional telescopes with continuous apertures on the observation conditions. Quantitative estimates are obtained for typical values of system parameters. Speckle-interferometry is shown to be preferable for forming images of small-sized objects.
