Abstract:
The formation and development of multiple filaments along the propagation path of a high-power femtosecond laser pulse have been studied. By means of 3D+time numerical simulations, we have demonstrated the "birth," "competition," and "death" of filaments along the propagation path. The effect of the separation between inhomogeneities in the initial beam profile on the conversion efficiency of the input pulse energy into the supercontinuum energy has been investigated. The decrease in the separation between two inhomogeneities has been shown to be the cause of the increase in the conversion efficiency.
