The estimates of multiple scattering (MS) contribution into spaceborne lidar returns from clouds are obtained that allow us to describe the process of the first orders of scattering formation. A method is proposed to introduce corrections for MS into the algorithm for reconstructing the scattering coefficient profile and optical thickness t of a cloud under an a priori uncertainty that is applicable at τmax < 3.5. We present some results of determination of the optical parameters of the stratus clouds top from signals computed by the Monte Carlo method.
