Optical beam angular spread in a medium characterized by the local Kerr nonlinearity and the relevant compensation techniques were examined in some detail. The resulting numerical data on the nonlinear spread as a function of the beam and medium parameters were compared with the diffraction divergence. Analytic expressions for optimal initial beam focusing and power were derived for which the nonlinear distortions in the far field were minimized.
