Abstract:

Clear-sky observations of direct solar radiation are used to calculate monthly mean values of the atmospheric aerosol optical depth (τa,λ0, λ0 = 550 nm) for 155 actinometric stations covering much of the former USSR territory. Six major types of annual behavior of τa,λ0 are identified, as they are formed due to peculiarities in a regional climate. Ranges of the background τa,λ0 values variability are estimated for different latitudinal zones, where aerosol emissions from big industrial centers are evaluated.
