Abstract:

Pulsed radiation undergoes distortions due to the multiple scattering effects while propagated through a layer of a scattering medium. This paper presents the results on the time shape of a pulse calculated numerically for the cases of media with different scattering phase functions. It is shown that even at rather large optical thickness (τ ≈ 10-20), time shape of scattered radiation pulse cannot be described using diffusion theories, being, as a rule, a bimodal distribution. Only at a significant increase in optical thickness (τ > 100-150), the photon distribution over photon free paths takes a unimodal "diffusion" shape.
