Abstract:

A new type of photophoretic motion of atmospheric aerosols is considered, namely, the photophoresis of particles in the field of outgoing thermal radiation of the Earth (thermal photophoresis). It is shown that the soot particles (as well as the others light and slightly heat conducting particles) in the stratosphere demonstrate high spectral response to photophoretic effects. In particular, the levitation and ascend against the force of gravity are predicted for the soot particles with the size of 1 to 2 mkm in the field of thermal radiation. At the same time, the thermal photophoresis, apparently, is not a significant mechanism in maintaining the stability and long-term existence of the known aerosol layers in the stratosphere and mesosphere.
