Abstract:

The variance of random partially coherent laser beam displacements in a turbulent atmosphere in the presence of thermal blooming is discussed. The variation of the propagation medium permittivity due to the laser-induced mean temperature gradient is shown to increase the random beam wander amplitude as compared to the linear case. Under certain conditions the laser-induced random temperature inhomogeneities caused by the turbulent mixing may further enhance the beam displacement variance.
