Abstract:

The effect of a volcanic cloud on the stratospheric trace gas composition after the El Chichon eruption was simulated by means of a 1-D photochemical model of the atmosphere (0-50 km). The heterogeneous hydroxyl decomposition on the surface of the sulphuric acid aerosol particles was found to be the dominant mechanism responsible for the ozone sink in volcanic clouds. The model and experimental data on a number of the trace gas constituents are discussed.
